Hurricane Preparedness
Are you ready for another Hurricane Season? Hurricane Season starts June 1st and goes through November 30th. There are three steps everyone can take to get ready for any disaster including a hurricane.
The first step is to make a plan. In this plan make sure you have emergency phone numbers, a meeting place, know your evacuation routes, establish an out of town contact, and know your works or children’s schools plan.
The second step is to make a kit. Make a kit with enough supplies for at least three days but preferably for fourteen days. Remember power could be out for weeks and PODs may take awhile to establish. The kit should have flashlights, a battery operated radio, batteries, a first aid kit, non-perishable food including a manual can opener, a gallon of water for each person a day, pet supplies, and any other emergency supplies you need. It is good idea to have a kit in your home and a small one in your car.
The third step is to stay informed. Staying informed means being aware of current or future threats, listening to the news or weather radio, learning what evacuation routes and zones are working, and knowing your communities disaster plan. The Precinct Two Safety Department has a variety of pamphlets and brochures available to help you be informed. If you are in an evacuation zone and told to evacuate remember the 4 imperative P’s: People, Pets (pet medications, and food), Papers (Important Documents like insurance papers, medical records, prescriptions, and an ID), and Pictures (of valuables and fond memories, since these are more difficult to replace than other processions).
