Chemicals are Everywhere
We use chemicals every day. We use them to clean our house, to fuel our cars, and help plants grow. In small quantities and when handled safely chemicals can be helpful in making our lives better. When chemicals are not handled properly or contained in large quantities, such as during transport, they can become hazardous to our health.
You can help ensure the safe handling of chemicals. When you use chemicals around your home follow direction printed on the label. Never mix chemicals unless directed to do so by the manufacturer. Always dispose of chemicals and empty containers properly. Chemicals should always be stored properly and out of reach of children.
In the event of a major chemical release, you will be notified by officials. In many areas of Harris County Pct. 2 the primary source of warning will be the outdoor warning siren. You may also be informed by phone, for this reason you should avoid using the phone except for an emergency. During a chemical release the primary choice of protection is to Shelter in Place, however you may also be asked to evacuate. If you are asked to evacuate follow the routes given by local authorities and take your disaster kit with you.
Contact your Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) to find how your community will notify you of a major chemical release. Your LEPC is made of representatives from government, industry, business, first responders, and others who plan to keep you safe in a chemical emergency. The links on the left are to area LEPCs.
